5 New Year’s Resolutions For Writers

5 New Year’s Resolutions For Writers

2012 is quickly approaching and each new year most people make resolutions to make improvements or accomplish the things they didn’t the previous year. This year I plan to quit smoking as well as adopt a healthier lifestyle in general. I also have a list of writing related goals that I thought I would share. I have spent the last year trying to learn as much as I possibly can but this year I hope to put forth more of an effort in accomplishing tasks to help further my writing career.

It’s no secret that reading will help make us better writers. Try picking up a book that you wouldn’t normally read and use it to study something a little different. Just don’t get caught up in reading and learning so much that you forget to work on your own projects.

Make time to write

Sometimes I feel I have all the time in the world to write and yet I never actually sit down long enough to work on my own projects. I always find myself getting caught up in other things and then feeling guilty because I know this is an area I need to work on. This year, try setting aside thirty minutes a day to write. It doesn’t have to be anything in particular just write. You never know what great ideas will come from it.

Give yourself some space

Working from home can get a little crazy due to all the other people around the house. Kids can make it especially difficult to concentrate. Set up an area that is just yours. A place where you can sit and be alone with your thoughts without interruptions in order to work on any writing projects you have been considering.

Start your own blog

This is the big one for me. Every writer needs a website or blog especially if they are working on something they intend on getting published. This is a great way to market your writing business or novel you’ve finally completed.

Write a novel

At some point every writer has likely considered writing a novel. Now is the time to do it. Set a goal to not only get started but to finish. It doesn’t have to be ready to be published but there is a novel waiting to be written and it may be one that can only be written by you.

I made this a short list because I think it’s important to not overwhelm yourself by trying to take on too much at one time but if you put your mind to it, set clear goals, and put the effort you can accomplish anything you choose.

  1. Excellent list of goals. Sometimes the best New Year’s Resolutions are the simplest ones, because those are the ones that are often overlooked in favor of more complex (and difficult) goals that never continue through the entire year because they are unrealistic.

    Thank you Janis. :)

I am terrible about following through with any goals I set and I am hoping to make this year a better year. :)

I think quitting smoking will be the most difficult so maybe all the others will help me keep my mind off of the cigarettes! lol.
