Dave Haslett offers some great tips in his guest post, 17 Things for Writers to Blog About, but what if you want to start blogging and you’re new to writing? You’ve read so many articles on the subject and you know starting your own blog can be very beneficial. It’s a great way to show off your writing skills to potential clients, promote a product or service you provide, and well, you can even make some money with affiliate marketing, but if you don’t know what to write about it can be a little overwhelming.
First you have to think about the big picture. What are you hoping to accomplish with your blog? Do you have a book you are trying to promote? Do you want to help people? Are you hoping to make money with your blog? By asking yourself these and other questions you can determine where to start.
If you’ve asked yourself those questions and still aren’t sure there are three areas that do well: Health and wellness, relationships, and making money. There are many subcategories that fall under these three main topics so the possibilities are endless.
For instance, under health and wellness you can blog about diet and exercise, senior health, children’s health, “going green,” etc.
A relationship blog can focus on parent/child relationships, marriage, divorce, teen advice or any other topic that would fit under that category.
People always want to know how to make money. Are you making money? Tell them how! Give them advice on how they can do the same.
Whichever category you choose keep in mind that your goal is to give the readers what they want. Think about questions they might have and answer them the best that you can. I personally love reading anything from the above suggestions in which the writer has had and relates personal experience with. If the writer tells me how they dealt with an issue, solved a problem, how they made money, or how they lost 106 pounds then I keep reading because I want to know how I can do it too.
If you find that you are passionate about a certain subject, whether it’s one listed or not, that’s a great place to start. Sit down and write a list of potential article/blog post ideas. The longer the list gets the better! By the time you are done writing the list, you may just have three or four pages of post ideas.
Regardless of what you choose to blog about, you have to be passionate about it. I want to make money but I wouldn’t start a blog just for that purpose if it’s not a subject I love. Why? The answer is quite simple. I would get bored writing about it and eventually just run out of gas leaving readers to find a better blog to ride along with while my blog just sits there; rusting away because I don’t have the energy or motivation to find a way to refuel.
So now what? You’ve found a topic you can be passionate about, you have a list of fabulous topic ideas and you’re ready to get your blog started. How do you do that? You need a domain name. Start thinking about some possible ideas and I will be discussing that in next week’s post.
